If you are looking to grow your following on Medium but you don’t know exactly how to do it, then you are in the right spot because I am about to go through some tips and tricks on how to grow your following on Medium and what you might be doing wrong.
1. Use an Attractive Headline
Now I’m sure that anyone who wants to grow their following on Medium is reading this because they saw the headline and thought something like this “Oh, this is what I needed” and that is because the headline was direct and straight to the point.
Think of it like this, you may have just written the best story, article, blog, whatever it is but the headline on it is something like, “This is so Cool” it will not get any clicks and so the best story, article, blog, whatever it is has not been read by anyone.

On that note Smedian is a great way to join a publication because there are thousands of publications with thousands of followers on there and all you need to do is go to Smedian and click “request to contribute”
3. Use Simple Language
Stephen Moore (a Medium writer with 29k+ followers) said:
“Simple is always better.” — Stephen Moore
And he is 100% right, if your readers can not follow what you are saying there are more likely to click off your article and read someone else's.
Most people think that writing is about showing off your “amazing” vocabulary, but it is not. You want to make the readers life easier, not harder because they are here to read what you wrote not google’s definition of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
4. Create an Image
This might sound a bit confusing but have you ever listened to Ryan Renolds? Well if you have, you might notice that when he is saying something funny he will “paint a picture” in your head to explain and make what ever he is saying more funny. You need to do the same with your writing.
You know how your English teachers use to always say “show don’t tell”, it is the same thing, create an image.
5. Follow-For-Follow
Now, I am not a big fan of this but I’ll mention it anyway because it is probably the easiest and fastest way to grow your following. It is really simple, you just follow people in the hopes that they will follow you back.
- Find someone with at least 100 followers (the following limit for Medium is about 125 a day).
- Go through and follow everyone that is following them.
- Wait about a day and then unfollow everyone. Then repeat.
